Let It Snow

Last sunday, we took a bus up to Mount Seymour for our first day of skiing and snowboarding in Canada. The mountain decided to put on a bit of a show, by rustling up a nice friendly blizzard that stung our faces and made visibility terrible. There were plenty of people out on the slopes though, and a few of them were even worse than we were. We had missed the early lesson, so we went out to see what we could pick up before the next one. For someone like myself, with whole hours of snowboarding experience, this was an excellent idea. I started to remember a few things, and I improved from the "can't stand up" level to the "danger to himself and others" level almost immediately. For someone who has never skiied before, like Katie, this idea wasn't nearly so good. After falling down, straining various minor muscles and getting ice in her trousers, she was about ready to throw the whole thing in. Luckily, the lesson turned that right around, and she soon could make it down the green runs without a hitch. Well, maybe a few small hitches.

This weekend we're heading up to Whistler, which is said by many to be the best place to ski in the world. I don't think it'll matter too much to us, but I am certainly looking forward to the experience. I will be sticking to the green runs though, as I'm still not slick enough with my turns to slow myself down on the steeper runs without ploughing into soft-looking people or trees. At least I've avoided serious injury (so far).
